Oaxaca | Mexico | 2008

The Working Class

Oaxaca is situated in Southern Mexico, its culture rich in the arts and crafts of the Zapotec and Mixtec times. Its population is mainly Indigenous and is one of the poorest states in Mexico.

This is a photo journal of the working class in Oaxaca. Starting from as young as 2 years of age to the elderly, selling trinkets, beaded necklaces and other wares on the streets to make ends meet is a very typical sight in Oaxaca. Children often have to choose between going to school or helping make ends meet for their families. Poverty is a vicious cycle.

10% of profit will be contributed towards the Dream Big fund, which aims to enable these children to attend school as well as an opportunity for them to be just children. For our project ('Cameras for Kids') in Oaxaca, please also check out the 'Cameras for Kids Project, Oaxaca' album in the gallery.

Click here to go back to llt Photography gallery.
Click here to go back to Dream Big website.

Black Saturday | 7 Feb 2009 | Kinglake | Victoria | Australia

The aftermath of Black Saturday was truly felt when I saw with my own eyes, the destruction that was laid upon the small town of Kinglake. Chimneys were the only parts of homes left standing. Every so often, amidst the debris, there laid a child's tricycle, basketball ring... a family's bathtub...

However Kinglake and many towns torn apart by the fire will rebuild! Already life is beginning to surface among the blackened barks...

Click here to return to LLT Photography gallery

In 2007, we offered the 'Cameras for Kids' photography project to 20 indigenous street children in Oaxaca.

It was an amazing experience to watch the children develop and grow in confidence as each day went by!

All the photographs in this gallery were taken by the kids of Oaxaca. Most of these kids have never used a camera in their lives!

To learn more about the kids, click here.

To learn more about this project, click here.

To return to the LLT photography gallery, please click here.

Volunteer Project: Kilimanjaro Kids Care

6 Aussie girls from Melbourne volunteered at Kilimanjaro Kids Care, in Himo, Tanzania. Kids Care houses 20 children, most of whom are single or double orphans, some coming from extremely sad backgrounds. They are all cared for by 3 super house moms who we called Bibi (for grandmother), Mama Makrina and the youngest, Flora. We helped the children with their reading, writing, and also tried to inspire them through creative means such as photography and art. And of course, not forgetting 'Treasure Chest' ... the children get to choose a present out of the treasure chest for every 5 books they've read and you can imagine how much they LOVED reading!

The Children: Jacky | Revo | Subira | Neema | Omega | Mary | Christina | Edward | Innocent | Peter | Joseph | Exsuper | Gifty | Eliona | Benny | Shaban | Mwenda | Upendo | Christopher | Jones

Brasil | 2009 | Travels

From Rio de Janeiro to Itacare to Salvador, the colours and sounds changed dramatically. Rio with its prestine beaches and beautiful people from all classes (men and women!!), laid back Itacare with its surf beaches from heaven and Salvador where the colour gets darker and the drumming gets louder, Brazil is one of my favourite places on earth.

Highlights | Rio de Janeiro | Favela

We visited one of the largest favelas (slums) in South America, Rocinha. The locals claim a population of 150,000+, all the way from the outskirts of Rio to the top of the mountains! Rio's favelas are pleasured with what we would regard as the best views in the whole of Brazil! In Rocinha, there was a single road in and a single road out, pray there be no police raids as those roads are blocked and all living there are not, are locked in! Here's another mind blowing reality. All of Rocinha are connected by steep steps circling through deep alleyways. Imagine having bought a refrigerator or something heavy and having to cart that all the way up the mountain on your back?! That apparently is a common sight.

Run by one of the prominent drug lords in Rio de Janeiro, the banks in Rocinha are the only ones in the State that haven't been robbed! As we walked through the favela, we would be told at some point to put our cameras away as "somewhere down there, near that blue umbrella is a drug point, but we don't know where it is exactly".

Without meddling into the politics of corruption, education/lack thereof, child drug soldiers, the entire illegality of favelas in the country, Rocinha was most intriguing.

Highlights | Salvador | Candomble

Candomble is an Afro-Brazilian religion. The ritual involved the possession of the initiated by Orishas, offerings and sacrifices of the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdom, healing, dancing/trance and percussion. It is the only religion I have seen to date where both Christianity and African "voodoo" are combined into one and exists in harmony.

In a room within a favela in Salvador, there was a bowl of rice in the middle, an offering for what Christians call the 'devil' and what Candomble regards as the 'messenger'. In the left hand corner of the room sat the statue of white Jesus Christ. In the right hand corner of the room sat a black god. A middle aged woman, sucking her thumb rather aggresively, came bouncing into the room. She was supposedly possessed by the spirit of a child and has come out to offer lolly pops in exchange for 1 Reals, no change given if you haven't got the exact money! The drumming began, followed by an overweight man wearing some old fashion hat, whip in hand. His cigar was lit, he dropped his head, his back arched and shook uncontrollably and he fell into a trance. Other priests around him slowly followed suit. Songs and dance began, followed by blessings with some smoky green water that was thrown over everyone in the room...a short version of what was a long, loud and bizarre 3-hour procession!

Photographs were forbidden.

For more technical details of Candomble, see here.

Colombia | 2009 | Travels

Colombia is situated in Northwestern South America. A beautiful country marked by endless plains of coffee and banana plantations, mountain ranges as far as the eyes can see and some amazingly warm people. Colombia has yet to dissociate herself from her notorious past of drug cartels and possessing one of the highest homicide rates in Latin America!

Our experience.

The People | The Colombianos are one of the friendliest and most hospitable people I have ever met. Whether you are family or not, you are treated like one! The people take a lot of pride in everything that they do.

The Country | Yes there were armed military soldiers everywhere we went, a little unearthing at the start but almost comforting by the end. So far, they'd been harmless. Drug lords... we didn't run into any.

Scary looking militants and heartless drug lords aside, the country is one of the most beautiful we have seen. The layers upon layers of beautiful mountain ranges were a sight to behold. A typical looking colombian hacienda perched up on one of the hilltops, in its majesty and tranquility, is a dream to keep dreaming. Coffee and banana plantations scattered all throughout the country's glorious rolling hills, accompanied by addictive offerings of cafe tinto (black coffee) everywhere we went...it's hard to not fall in love with Colombia.

Highlights | Bullfighting (Torear in Spanish)
We were very lucky to have been invited to an amateur bullfighting held in a small town called Fusagasuga. Quite the contrary to professional bullfights, the matadors do not hurt the bulls, the bulls hurt the matadors.. well and anyone else who crosses their paths!

The whole affair began at about 3pm. The matador prepped himself with a few local beers (Aguila) before the arrival of the bulls. Their imminent arrival created a bit of anxiety amongst the crowd. The truck backed up countless times on the wrong angle. It took awhile before the driver alighted with surprise surprise, an Aguila in his hand. The matador checked out his competition and put on his costume, heavily embroidered in gold, skintight pants, silk jacket (not sure if real silk in this case) and montera (hat). He practiced his moves as the first bull which was more interested in grazing than fighting was dragged out of the truck. It wasn't long before the second bull, with the numbers 283 branded onto its side, came charging out of the truck. It was an angry bull and it told the world so too! With his pink and gold cape, matching his costume, the matador teased the angry bull. The bull challenged back, hoofs tearing at the ground beneath it, head lowered, horns positioned. It wasn't long before the Matador was brought to the ground. The crowd cheered and "ooo'ed". The afternoon, marked by excessive consumption of Aguilas, Aguardientes (smells and tastes like Ouzo) and other irresponsible but fun convivial concoctions, the mad part of the crowd decided to join in! That was not a pretty sight. The bull is still an angry charging bull regardless of the very fact that we were at an amateur torear! Black eyes, braised bodies, injured groins were common ground. The crowd cheered into the night. 283 was still out there at nightfall welcoming the crowd into the ring. The matador was no where to be seen.
